Work culture in offices and factories over a period of time have changed. It is not one type of culture remain dominant now. People from different professional backgrounds, religions, race, gender, educational background and age are prevalent now. Think of 1950-60, certain perceived criteria are considered as parameters to allow people to join. Specific choice of gender, race and religions were preferred. But over a period of time and globalization of business, the whole scenario at workplace has changed. It has brought diversity. Diversity has brought creativity and new ideas in business. Employees have become more aware of each other’s culture. The acceptance of other views and beliefs have given a new dimension. But HR has challenge in diversified work culture. Even a smell at lunchroom may escalate issues where urgent attention and resolving are needed. Differences fuel tension and generate unnecessary arguments. Without open mind and understanding, confusion and conflicts may reduce productivity and create negative atmosphere. Therefore, HR here need to play important role to make workplace inclusive nature. Creating policy and giving awareness training time to time , explaining policy to new joiners at the time of joining are essential. Properly trained and awareness can create engaged atmosphere at workplace. HR should evaluate and understand the existing policies and check where are discriminations there. So redesigning all policies aligning with diversified employee culture is next step. HR should check its recruitment and selection policy and what are the points there in the policy which will reflect that policy is allowing diversity at workplace. Job descriptions should not specify a particular gender or religion or race to be given preferences. Code of conduct should maintain fair balance and should not reflect biasness. Even other policies like work life policy, Whistleblowing Policy and Flexible work policy should be transparent, maintain equality and give fair opportunities to all. Well designed policies where no discrimination on gender, race, culture , province and religion contribute to overall positive atmosphere.
