Negotiation is part of our life and for existence. Every day negotiation is becoming complex. But its value cannot be denied. We negotiate everyday in our life and our growth lies how good negotiator we are. The subject negotiation comes in life because too many persons are running for too few resources. And we need better and favorable terms and good size of pie. So, negotiation comes. Who will take legitimate right over resources in modern world order. It is a constant process And in HR, role of negotiation holds a major part. The art of managing by good negotiation is part of job and managers should know it. Is it one day skill learned? Simply, it is not that. Negotiation requires prior preparation with data, understanding needs of employees and patient hearing of it. Further the right time and place should not be devalued. Sometimes creating counter claim and expectation of management if employees’ demands are met should be devised and presented. Negotiation is not fighting and employer will win and employee lose situation. Both employer and employee should devise a strategy that it is WIN-WIN situation. Negotiation is an art. Competence comes through active involvement and practice. Learning from previous mistakes helps to make next negotiation more productive and can generate fruitful results. It is patient hearing of employee demand and root cause of this demand. Then it is important to check the justification of demand. Negotiation may be one to one or it may be with many. Both are critical and complex. It should be remembered that today’s employees are educated, more aware and know their standing in terms of market value and demand. And handling this type of employees are not easy . Management also do not want to relieve skilled employees and remain irrelevant in competent market where people can change the P& L account and Balance sheet of the company. So today’s negotiations are more complex and HR needs matured handling the whole situation so that both employer and employee remain happy and satisfied.
